Story and photo caption on website a misrepresentation

Dear Editor,

I have noted on the website http://www.guyanaobservernews.org/content/view/4327/94/ a story under the caption ‘Senior cop, Vyphus wants Jagdeo to stop directing the Police Force.’  I wish to distance myself from that publication.

I am compelled to disassociate myself from and refute any sinister motive and/or written contents associated with the photograph [provided] which was taken inadvertently and by chance. The said photograph was also featured on the same Guyana Observer News website. [Ed note: the photo appears to show Commander Vyphuis and Mr Mark Benschop talking.]

I was standing in Brickdam Police Station compound along with three other officers – Senior Superintendent Josiah, and Assistant Superintendents Pareshram and Marshall discussing the programme for the ‘A’ Division luncheon and the awards ceremony, and awaiting the arrival of the Commissioner of Police, when Mr Mark Benschop approached me enquiring about a matter in connection with two females and a male suspect from Soesdyke. That was all I discussed.

I have observed in the said photograph two officers in the background; they were present at the time of the discussion but moved immediately when they observed Freddie Kissoon taking the photograph. However, they were in  proximity and can vindicate me as to the contents of my discussion with the individual, who had cause to raise an issue concerning a suspect who was granted station bail. The said matter had engaged the attention of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who has since advised as to the way forward.

Further, I wish to state categorically, that I had no reason to apologise or to express sorrow for any action taken by me in the past concerning the said individual, whom the Force charged concerning his behaviour at Le Repentir Dumpsite, impounding his vehicle prior to the institution of the relevant charges.  Note the timing of the publication.

I am a loyal policeman and public servant.  I will never engage in making any negative remarks as it relates to the President, Government and the Commissioner of Police. The photograph is an image of deception.

I am convinced that this publication was done solely to besmirch and tarnish my character and destroy my image as it relates to the state and the Guyana Police Force.  I will execute my statutory mandate without fear or favour and will continue to act professionally in dealing with members of the public, irrespective of personality.

Yours faithfully,
George Vyphuis
Assistant Commissioner
Commander ‘A’ Division
