Grenada Prime Minister Tillman Thomas assumed the Chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on January 1, replacing Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
In a press statement, CARICOM said Thomas will hold the post until June 30, when he will be succeeded Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Dr. Denzil Douglas.
The two leaders along with Golding and acting Secretary-General Lolita Applewhaite comprise the Bureau of Conference of Heads of Government for the next six months.
In one of his first acts as Chairman, Thomas announced in his New Year’s Message that the Heads of Government had agreed to bestow the region’s highest award, the Order of the Caribbean Community, on recently retired Secretary-General Sir Edwin Carrington. Sir Edwin retired on December 31 after over 18 years in office.
