Three table tennis coaches namely Raynor `Copter’ Anderson, Linden Johnson and Muniram Persaud, are on a training course in Trinidad and Tobago that runs from January 5 – 11.
The three are in attendance at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Level Two instructors’ course compliments of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).
Each of the three have already gained accreditation as level one ITTF coaches and, because they are all active coaches they were deemed as the most eligible persons for this course, a release from the GTTA said.
According to secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe, while Anderson and Persaud are there to gain their level two accreditation, the programme will act as a refresher course for Johnson, who gained his level two accreditation some years ago.
Munroe explained that Johnson, a coach attached to the National Sports Commission, has to “refresh” his accreditation since it is now a requirement by the ITTF that coaches renew their coaching knowledge every five years.
Anderson, Munroe informed, coaches schools in the Linden area, while Persaud is attached to the private institution, Mae’s.
Upon their return, the trio will be expected to impart their knowledge to local coaches. Meanwhile, the GTTA has scheduled a domestic coaching and accreditation workshop, also set for this month, aimed at “standardizing the aspects of coaching” in Guyana.
The workshop is scheduled for local coaches and umpires and is expected to be held On January 15-16.
The three coaches are expected to members of the teaching staff that will conduct the course. Munroe said that the course will benefit the sport of table tennis across the board as the aim is to have all local coaches in Guyana accredited.
With the programme, coaches will be expected to “have to work be certified, and produce results in order to benefit from international accreditation, venture out with national teams, but more particularly to have them in tune with technical and tactical elements.”
Munroe stressed that using this system coaches will be selected to accompany national teams to international events and this will help eradicate the feeling that some coaches are favored over some.
