A security guard accused of stealing four tyres from Keishars’ Store was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of $75,000 after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Leon Thomas is that on November 16, 2010 at the Keishars Store he stole four tyres valued $120,000.
The 34-year-old defendant who resides at 54 Lime and Bent streets denied the charge of simple larceny.
Attorney-at-law Trenton Lake who represented the accused told the court that his client is being wrongfully accused for an offence he knows nothing about.
The lawyer however added that the details of the matter will be ventilated at the trial.
Lake then made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no antecedents, has a fixed address, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.
According to Lake, his client who is a security guard attached to the Keishars Store was on duty at the time the alleged theft is reported to have occurred. This, the lawyer said, led to his client’s arrest in the absence of any proper investigation by the police.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the magistrate that the facts are as charged and no further details were provided as to what had transpired on the day of the incident.
The prosecution had no objection to the bail application made by the attorney but requested that it be granted in a substantial sum to ensure that the accused returns to court to stand trial.
Thomas was ordered to return to court on January 14.
