PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A place, which was like a second home to Joey Carew, will provide the backdrop for his funeral service on Friday.
Carew’s eldest son, Michael Jr, announced on Monday that the Queen’s Park Oval, home of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club, of which Carew was a longtime member, would stage the event.
The younger Carew disclosed that a number of former players from across the Caribbean have indicated that they would be attending.
“We have set the funeral service for Friday because a number of former cricketers from around the Caribbean time to attend the service,” he said.
The funeral service is set to start at 10 in the morning, and Carew’s body will be cremated at a nearby crematorium.
Michael also added that the autopsy on his father revealed that he died from a heart attack.
Carew, a former Trinidad & Tobago captain and West Indies batsman, passed away at his home in Woodbrook in the two-island republic’s capital late on Saturday. He was 73.
His passing followed a trip to a medical clinic to seek treatment for a blood clot on his foot.
Carew was also a former chairman of the West Indies selection panel, enjoying three stints totalling over 20 years before he resigned five years ago.
He is widely regarded for mentoring T&T and West Indies batting legend, Brian Lara, who resided at his home for a number of years before achieving international cricket stardom.
