Following deliberations among the executives of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) on Sunday, it has been determined that January 30 will be the date for the hosting of the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers.
This was disclosed to Stabroek Sport by secretary of GABA, Robert Cadogan, when contacted by Stabroek Sport yesterday.
The GABA executive meeting, which was in the making since last December, was attended by top members of GABA, including GABA president, Trevor Rose.
Apart from setting a date for GABA’s AGM and elections, Cadogan explained that a number of other issues were discussed at the meeting.
Among the areas covered were a review of GABA’s past basketball year; the Burnham Court rehabilitation project and the restart of GABA’s two postponed tournaments; the Kevin Worrell Third Division Knockout Tournament and GABA’s Second Division Knockout Tournament.
Cadogan said that they are pushing to get the tournaments restarted before the AGM, since “only 12 days of competition remain,” for the completion of the two tournaments.
But drastically hindering the tournaments’ restart is the absence of one of the backboards at the Burnham Court.
Rose in a previous interview with Stabroek Sport had stated that they have acquired two backboards to replace those at the Burnham Court but they were presently at the airport awaiting clearance.
To tackle this problem Cadogan said that they are “exploring all avenues in regards to having the back boards out [cleared]”
He identified two factors that are delaying the clearance of the backboards.
“Lack of funds is one issue regarding the clearing of the boards and other is seeking a duty free concession to get it out [cleared].”
Cadogan noted that the location for the AGM was not confirmed but indicated that that issue was currently being addressed and the venue will be revealed when it has been finalised.
He added that he was not aware of any challenge to Rose’s position but stated that clubs are welcome to recommend candidates to the GABA when they have been notified of the meeting.
“I’m not aware of any new candidates who will be seeking election but when we notify the clubs they will respond and say if they have candidates in mind,” said Cadagon.
According to the secretary, documents are being prepared to be distributed to various clubs around Georgetown to inform them of the AGM and elections.
