President Bharrat Jagdeo says that the country experienced a huge spurt in economic activities last year, with many businesses reporting stronger returns than the previous year.
Tax returns in 2010 indicate a significant increase in economic activity, he said on Monday.
Jagdeo told reporters at a press briefing at the Office of the President that a full report on how the country did economically would be presented when he meets the press shortly.
He also made reference to a `What the people say’ feature in the Stabroek News, saying that the article did not reflect how businesses performed last year.
The President also mentioned the 2011 budget, saying that it would be presented in another few weeks and that it would continue to build on past strategies. However, he said that the budget this year will see an expansion of infrastructure supporting economic activity and a strong continued focused on bringing better services to people.
Jagdeo said too that the budget would also reflect a dedicated effort to raise the quality of services that are offered to citizens.
“We can do this now because we are doing better as a country, at least economic wise,” he added.
With respect to supplementary budgetary allocations, he said that government aims to keep the fiscal deficit within a certain range, noting that additional funds are requested to accelerate programmes as they are laid out.
