Three of the country’s top athletes in 2010 were rewarded by the West Indian Sports Complex for their performances at the entity’s location, Robb Street yesterday.
The 2010 junior Cricketer of the Year, Amir Khan, national under-20 football player, Trayon Bobb and men’s Open and mixed doubles Open winner at last year’s Pegasus Open lawn tennis competition, Jeremy Miller were each presented with sporting packages from the company’s proprietor Feroze Mohammad.
The trio received gears and apparel for their respective sporting disciplines.
The 18-year old Khan, who plays for the Everest Cricket Club and is a member of the national under-19 team, received a cricket bat and balls among other items from Mohammad while 17-year old Bobb, who was represented by his father, Fitzroy Bobb received a pair of football boots, a pair of football hose and a ball.
Miller, 19, received a tennis racket, a pair of tennis shoes and a quantity of balls.
According to Mohammad, his business has been making contributions to sports since its inception 18 years ago in 1992.
“We looked at the youngsters at the top of their game and who are coming up,” he said as he explained the process by which the players were identified.
“We normally make a donation for the new year for the last 18 years, but we normally do it with cricket alone. However, because other sports have been picking up in the country and more people are playing sports now I would like to also extend our contribution towards football and lawn tennis.
“I would like to wish the athletes in our country all the best that the new year has to offer,” he told Stabroek Sport following the presentation.
The recipients yesterday lauded Mohammad for his generous contribution and stated that the donation will be significant in their further development of the sport.
