The BK International Western Tigers Football Club’s inaugural Super Eight Tournament which was postponed last year due to the inclement weather, is rescheduled to kick off on Sunday at the Georgetown Football Club Ground.
President of the club Gordon Gilhuys held a press briefing yesterday to alert the public of his administration’s move to get the tournament up and running.
“We have already approached the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in the absence of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) for dates that will be available. The tournament will be run on the 16th, 21st, 23rd and 30th of this month,” Gilhuys told the media yesterday.
He added that he anticipated that the tournament will be successful since it will feature the Premier League teams.
The organization, according to Gilhuys, would like to make the tournament an annual one to be run as a warm up in November for the Kashif and Shanghai Tournament which kicks off in December, permitting good weather.
He urged football fans to support the tournament because it will help the club’s administration in their efforts to get Western Tigers to Suriname to compete in a Goodwill Tournament in June against two of the neighbouring country’s top teams.
“We have had discussion with the Surinamese federation since last year and we will be having further discussions this year to make sure preparations are in place,” Gilhuys stated.
Gilhuys proceeded to name a few of the sponsors who have already come onboard for the running of the tournament and they include Ansa McAl, BK International Inc., Cummings Electrical, Banks DIH, Toucan Industries, King’s Jewelry World, Hits and Jams and the National Communications Network (NCN).
The teams battling for the $500,000 top prize include the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Sunburst Camptown, Riddim Squad, Pele, Santos, Western Tigers and Fruta Conquerors.
Alpha United has also been named in the list of competitors.
The other prize monies are: second place – $200,000, third place – $100,000 and fourth place – $50,000.
