Paul Smith, accused of resisting arrest as well as insulting and assaulting two police officers, was yesterday placed on $20,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Smith is that on January 4, he resisted constable Gordon Andrews, who was trying to arrest him in the execution of his duties. It is alleged that on the same day Smith unlawfully assaulted Andrews. Additionally, he was charged with using insulting language to Andrews and with unlawfully assaulting Constable Ewart Paul.
Smith denied the four charges when they were read to him.
Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the facts were as charged and no additional details were provided to the court.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted Smith $5,000 bail for each charge and the matters were transferred to Court Ten for January 14.
Meanwhile, Orandy George, who was accused of behaving disorderly at the Kitty Police Station, was on Monday sent on his own recognisance by Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry.
George, 29, of 3031 Bel Air Avenue, is alleged to have committed the offence on January 6. The father of two, however, denied the charge.
Telford, in outlining the police’s case, told the court that George had gone into the Kitty Police Station to be questioned by ranks there in relation to an incident. George became annoyed, Telford said, and started behaving in a disorderly manner.
George’s attorney made an application for him to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he had no antecedents, posed no risk of flight and had a fixed address. After hearing the case, the Magistrate placed George on self bail.
The case was transferred to Court Three for January 14 for fixture and trial.
