Businessman Hareshnarine Sugrim, who turned himself in days after police issued a wanted bulletin for him, has been released on station bail and he is still to be charged.
Last week police said that Sugrim, called ‘Chiney’, was wanted for questioning in relation to causing death by dangerous driving following an accident which occurred at Number 78 Village, Corentyne on January 2 resulting in the death of Rajkumar Basdeo of Line Path, Skeldon, Corentyne.
Commander of Police ‘B’ Division Assistant Commissioner Stephen Merai told Stabroek News yesterday that Sugrim was granted bail due to a certain medical condition. The case file, the commander said, has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on whether or not Sugrim will be charged.
Reports reaching this newspaper had said that at around 7.35pm on the day in question Basdeo left his Lot 25 Line Path, Skeldon home riding motorcycle CD 7055. He was heading north on the western side of the Number 78 Village public road when motor van GMM 1564 which was allegedly speeding in the opposite direction attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided with him.
