Former West Indies captain Brian Lara will read the eulogy at the funeral for his former mentor Joey Carew at a service at St. Theresa’s Church, DeVerteuil Street, Woodbrook, Trinidad today.
Carew, 73, passed away last Saturday at his home after suffering a heart attack. Lara was very close to Carew, who served as his cricket guru.
After Lara scored 277 against Australia, in what was his first Test century, he paid tribute to Carew, noting his efforts at mentoring him.
A number of current and former regional cricketers are expected to attend the funeral service. After the service, Carew’s body will be taken to the crematorium in Long Circular, St. James, for the final rites.
Joey’s son Michael also mentioned that there will be a gathering of friends, family and well wishers at the Queen’s Park Oval, which was considered Carew’s second home.
