Officials at the John F Kennedy Airport, in New York on Thursday busted a Guyanese woman who attempted to smuggle over four kilogrammes of cocaine in milk cans.
Stabroek News has been reliably informed that Lisa Holder, 22, was held sometime Thursday night in the US, after airport officials found the cocaine stashed in her suitcase.
Holder, sources said, left Guyana hours before on a Caribbean Airlines flight which stopped over in Trinidad before continuing to the US. The cocaine was not detected at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport or at the Piarco Airport, in Trinidad.
Only recently, a Guyanese man was caught with cocaine at the JFK International Airport, after telling inspectors he had “cooked rabbit” in his luggage. Three bricks of cocaine were found in the luggage of Roger Levans of Queens, who travelled on a Delta Airlines flight from Georgetown on December 29, 2010. Levans was released on US$100,000 bail after being charged.
The numerous cases of Guyanese passengers found with cocaine at airports overseas have fuelled concerns about the quality of security at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
In January last year, a woman was found with 50 lbs of cocaine in her suitcase at JFK. She was charged in New York and charges were also laid against persons here.
