The inaugural BK International Western Tigers Super Eight football tournament kicks off this evening with a double header at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground from 6pm where four Premier League teams will begin the battle for supremacy.
In match one the technically sound Guyana Defence Force (GDF) football squad goes head-to-head with a Sunburst Camptown side who are fitting opponents while the feature clash will pit the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) against Riddim Squad from 8pm.
Originally, tonight’s feature clash was to be contested between Alpha United and Riddim Squad but Alpha United has informed the Western Tigers committee that they will not be competing in the tournament.
According to Gordon Gilhuys, president of Western Tigers, the Alpha United squad would have been a good attraction for the tournament as they are the club to beat at the moment and football fans would have turned out in their numbers to see if their team could prevail.
However, the club was able to invite the GFC club who quickly showed interest in competing and accepted the invitation. The teams will be competing for the $500,000 top prize while the runner up will have to settle for $200,000 and the third and fourth place teams will be the recipients of $100,000 and $50,000 respectively.
This tournament is also in aid of helping the team raise funds to compete in a Goodwill Tournament in Suriname in June.
