Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan dominated the senior men and women’s categories respectively of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) National Cross Country race, held yesterday afternoon at the National Park.
Contesting the AAG’s first event for the year, Forde crossed the finish line in a time of 25 minutes, 58 seconds (25:58) to capture the win in the 8km senior men’s
race, ahead of rivals Dennis Horatio (26:16) and Wilbert Mingo, who crossed the finish line in a time of 22 minutes, 27 seconds (22:27).
“I just bided my time and then made my move at the end. It was a good race, the fellas [Horatio and Mingo] ran reasonably well,” said Forde following the race.
“It’s the start of the season and everybody has a lot of work to do, but it’s good to see them running like that… I look forward to a good season as the year progresses,” Forde added.
Morgan easily won the 6km senior women’s race in a time of 23 minutes, 10 seconds (23:10), minutes ahead of second place finisher Ashanti Scott who completed the race in 26 minutes, 46 seconds (26:46).
Running alongside and covering the same distance as the senior women’s race, the junior boys’ race ended with Nathania Giddings beating the rest of the field and limiting Hezron Pedro to second and Grivon Grant to third places.
Doretta Wilson was the winner of the 4km junior girls’ race with a winning time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds with Andrea Foster second in 16
minutes, 45 seconds (16:45) and Adana Roberts third with a time of 17 minutes, four seconds (17:04).
