Complainant to pay $10,000 costs after dropping assault case

A woman was yesterday ordered to pay $10,000 costs after she declined to proceed with a case of unlawful and malicious assault allegedly meted out to her by a man.

Abiola McGarrel, along with George Whitten, the accused who pleaded not guilty to the charge, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

When asked by the magistrate why she wished to have the charges against the accused dropped, the virtual complainant (VC) stated, “Because I’m five months pregnant” for Whitten.

The matter was dismissed and McGarrel was ordered to pay the $10,000 court costs.
