President Bharrat Jagdeo gave assurances to boat operators plying the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route that there are no plans to sell the two stellings.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Jagdeo and Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn met a delegation organised by Vice President of the Demerara Speedboat Association Lancelot Moseley on Thursday at the Office of the President. He told GINA that government’s assurance on the issue was a relief to operators.
Earlier this month government also pledged to provide a shed and a more comfortable platform for passengers. “Minister Benn who we all know is a man of action had promised to look at it some time soon,” Moseley said.
There are currently over 50 boats operating the Stabroek to Vreed-en-Hoop route. Passengers are required to comply with a turn system that is strictly monitored by the Maritime Administration Department officials at both sides of the river. The Public Works Ministry had laid out building a bulwark aback of the boats to prevent sinking, floatation devices were installed under seats and covers to keep out rain and sunlight.
Moseley said boats plying the Demerara River have met all of the ministry’s specifications and will be in compliance with any stipulated safety regulation. “Safety for our passengers is our motto,” Moseley said.
