A 24-year old East Coast Demerara man was last evening in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) following a vehicular accident at the Carifesta Avenue and Vlissengen Road junction.
Reports are that around 10:30 pm, a Toyota pick-up, bearing registration GKK 566 was proceeding west along the Kitty Public Road towards the Carifesta Avenue/Vlissengen Road junction when it collided with a motorcar bearing registration PGG 6224.
Anand Mahadeo of Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD) who was at the wheels of the pick-up was flung from the vehicle during the collision and according to reports, the man was rushed to the public hospital in an unconscious state. He sustained injuries to his arms, legs and hospital sources listed his condition as critical. The pick-up belonged to a private security service on the ECD.
Security guard Gary Gonsalves, who was an occupant of the pick-up at the time of the accident, told this newspaper at the GPH last evening that he was sitting behind the driver of the vehicle when the incident occurred. He said that the vehicle’s siren and flashing lights were on at the time and he recalled seeing the car moving off from the seawall area close to the Celina Resort towards the public road.
He said that the car slammed into the right side of the pick-up which toppled a few times before coming to a halt on the median along Carifesta Avenue.
Gonsalves stated that the group had moments earlier “changed shift” and were heading to the city to drop off a staff member when the accident occurred. He said that he and the other occupants of the vehicle escaped with minor injures but Mahadeo bore the brunt of the impact.
At the scene police officers questioned the occupants of the car as well as its driver who said he was “trying to do the right thing”, but was prompted by another occupant of the car to move onto the public road at that point to avoid the traffic lights at the junction.
Mahadeo, who was being prepared for surgery around midnight last night, remained unconscious and his employers were attempting to make contact with his relatives.
The driver of the car was subsequently taken into police custody.
