A Brazilian man, who is one of two men suspected of murdering 14-year-old miner Elton Thompson last week, was arrested by police on Monday.
In a press release issued yesterday, police said that acting on information received they were able to apprehend the 18-year-old suspect at Itaballi. The man, according to the release, remained in custody yesterday assisting police with investigations. Police are still hunting for the second suspect.
It is alleged that two Brazilian nationals murdered Thompson, during a beating at Chinee Creek, Puruni, last Tuesday.
Thompson and another miner, Jonas Perreira, 26, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, were drinking together with two Brazilian nationals.
It is alleged that an argument broke out during which the Brazilians assaulted Thompson and Perreira with pieces of wood about their bodies.
The two were later taken to the Bartica Hospital, where Thompson was pronounced dead on arrival while Perreira was admitted as a patient. Thompson’s body has since been brought to the city.
