The Delegation of the European Union in Guyana recently awarded six grant contracts valued $190M to civil society organisations in Guyana focused on boosting Amerindian interests.
In a press release the EU said the contracts re financed under the Call for Proposals of the Non State Actors and Local Authority – In Country Actions.
The main objective of the grants is to strengthen the capacities of Amerindian communities in using their rights of initiative and assuming duties and responsibilities under the Amerindian Act 2006. The grants were awarded to the following organisations: the Muritaro Village Council, The Justice Institute of Guyana, St Cuthbert’s Village Council, Conservation International Guyana, the University of Guyana and Youth Challenge Guyana. The grants were awarded in December.
The EU Delegation is currently funding four similar projects in Guyana, awarded in 2008 and 2009 totalling over $300 million, the release said.
