A labourer who was accused of attempting to steal 110 ft of welding cable belonging to BK International Limited was yesterday placed on $80,000 bail on a charge of simple larceny.
It is alleged that on January 11 at Mandela Avenue, Tony Ellis attempted to steal the welding cable valued at $110,000, property of BK International.
When he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, the Pike Street Sophia resident pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge.
According to the prosecution, on the night in question at around 20:45 hrs security guards on duty at BK International heard a noise and made checks around the compound. As a result, they found the defendant attempting to steal the items in question. He was apprehended by the guards and subsequently arrested and charged.
When given a chance to speak in his defence, the accused stated that he was not found in the compound, nor did he steal anything.
After hearing this the magistrate entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Ellis, granted him bail, and transferred the matter to Court Six for January 24, for report and fixture for trial.
