Dear Editor,
I wish to congratulate Ms Joan Baveghems on her recent accession to the office of Member of Parliament. Ms Baveghems is well known by both party members and citizens as one of the most vibrant and steadfast political activists in Guyana. She might not have attracted major publicity in the daily newspapers or the electronic media, but her long and relentless struggle for justice and equality in Guyana is noted.
This long-standing stalwart of the Peoples National Congress Reform brings to the parliament a wealth of political knowledge.
Her understanding and perspective on Guyana’s political history is critical to the development of that kind civil debate that is so necessary for the nation. I salute Ms Baveghems and trust that she will continue to advance the struggles of the ordinary Guyanese, a struggle that defines her political involvement. I would also like to wish Mrs Volda Lawrence every success in her new portfolio as the PNCR spokesperson for Finance and Economic Matters in the Parliament, I am confident that she will execute her mandate with the kind of professionalism and competence that characterizes her work.
Let me also wish all those members who have now undertaken new assignments in the National Assembly, every success in their specific area of responsibility.
Yours faithfully
Lurlene Nestor
