The Food and Drug Department is recalling Metronidazole tablets USP 250mg, Batch No. 312566, due to the presence of ‘underweight’ tablets.
According to a release from the department yesterday, this batch of tablets has an expiry date of 05/2012; and is manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals, USA.
Underweight tablets, the release explained, do not contain the full amount of active ingredient within a single tablet and a patient therefore will not receive the prescribed dose necessary to pharmacologically and therapeutically mitigate the disease and restore the health of the patient.
In the case of severe infections this inefficacy could be life threatening, the release added.
According to information available on the Internet, Metronidazole tablets are used to kill or prevent growth of certain bacteria and protozoa.
These tablets have also been used to treat infections of the central nervous system, skin, respiratory tract, bones and joints, gynaecologic, abdomen and vaginal infections as well as intestinal infections.
