A man yesterday confessed to snatching a woman’s gold chain when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on January 13, Robert Cox, of 97 Costello Housing Scheme, stole a gold chain valued $65,000 and a gold band valued $75,000, property on Bernadette King. King was not present in court.
The prosecutor told the court that King, who is a market vendor, was walking towards Brickdam when Cox approached her from behind and snatched the items from her.
Cox then pushed King to the ground and attempted to escape on his bicycle. The woman managed to get up and raise an alarm, after which a bus driver was able to arrest Cox.
The accused was handed over to the police and the woman’s chain was later recovered.
Cox told the court he stole the chain but denied knowledge of the band. Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry remanded him to prison and set February 1 for sentencing, pending a probation report.
