The West Indies selectors are happy with the fitness of Guyanese strokemaker Ramnaresh Sarwan and that is why they have included him in the West Indies World Cup squad announced yesterday.
Chairman of the selection panel Clyde Butts said Sarwan has proven himself and they think he is ready.
“Sarwan is fit again, he has worked on his fitness and we are happy with this fact. He has played in the regional 50 overs tournament and the Champions League and he did not break down. If you look at Sarwan you would see that he is in much better shape at the moment and we are happy with this,” said Butts.
The West Indies selectors had dropped Sarwan from the team that played the Test series in Sri Lanka recently citing that his poor fitness levels led to frequent breakdowns and this was not good for West Indies cricket.
Yesterday, Butts said he was hopeful that the right hander was past those days.
“We are hoping that with the increased level of fitness, Sarwan will not breakdown as easy as he used to. Of course injuries are always around but it was happening too frequently with him.”
Butts added that Sarwan has passed a fitness test conducted by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and this was sufficient for them to include him.
“He has done a fitness test in Guyana and passed it, so we are good with that. He has not been able to take a test set up by the WICB because of the cricket schedule.”
