The money-changer charged with the murder of Cornelia Ida taxi-driver, Dhanpaul Ramharakh was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magis-trate’s court yesterday.
Fazal Bacchus, 40, of Lot 7 Sea View, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara was not required to plead to the capital offence of murder and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin.
It is alleged that on January 16 at Sea View, he murdered Ramharakh.
Police had said in a statement that Ramharakh and the suspect had an argument during which he (Ramharakh) was assaulted about his body. He was taken to the Leonora Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The incident occurred at around 7:45 pm on Sunday at Sea View.
Ramharakh, 46, had responded to a call from a friend who told him that her neighbour was arguing with her, relatives had told this newspaper. One relative had said that upon observing the body at the hospital, the neck appeared to have been broken. This was confirmed by the autopsy.
Attorney-at-law Mischa Puran entered an appearance for Bacchus yesterday. Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews said that the file was not yet completed and the magistrate set the matter for April 5. Relatives sobbed as Bacchus was led out of court.
