The PPP today said that party stalwart Gail Teixeira is also in the running to be the party’s presidential candidate this year.
A release from Freedom House said “The People’s Progressive Party has been advancing its discussion on the issue of choosing a Presidential Candidate for the 2011 General and Regional Elections.
“At the last meeting of the Executive Committee five persons were identified as having expressed interest or were nominated. These are Moses Nagamootoo, Ralph Ramkarran, Clemet Rohee, Gail Teixeira and Donald Ramotar.
“These discussions are expected to be intensified with a view of coming to a conclusion where the candidate would be selected as soon as possible.” Teixeira’s name was the only new one on the list as the other four candidates have already declared their interest.
Teixeira has had long service in the party and remigrated from Canada to serve as Dr Cheddi Jagan’s secretary during the opposition years. She later functioned as Secretary of the Patriotic Coalition for Democracy which had been established among opposition parties in the run-up to the historic 1992 general elections.
Upon the accession of the PPP/C to office she became Minister of Health. She was later switched to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and also had a stint as Minister of Home Affairs. She also acted in the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
She has served for several years now as the presidential advisor on governance.
