Dear Editor,
After not having visited Bartica in six years, I was fascinated by the smoothly asphalted streets and avenues through which speedy traffic whisked away along diverse routes. And, additionally, by the many colourful, luxurious and imposing commercial buildings on either side of First Avenue. Evidently, Bartica is bubbling with commerce.
But, later, as I was walking along Third Street, historically known as Clock Street, the dull, dingy and partly dilapidated appearance of our beloved Bartica Community Centre instantly clipped my first emotion of elation. I gazed upon our cornerstone structure sadly, primarily because I had gotten my secondary education there, as a consequence of which I am able to pen this letter. Numerous doctors, laywers, politicians, business people, erudite scholars and eminent academicians have been educated at our cherished Community Centre, way back when it began to be used as a tutorial institution. Over the years, many minds have been infused with volumes of learning from edifying books read at our library which was housed in the bottom flat of this centre.
We – the Bartica community – should contribute voluntary inputs to repair, spruce-up and beautify this structure, which should have been transformed into an imposing edifice over time. We should do this not only to reflect our sense of values and pride, but also to have this building appear spectacular in the eyes of visitors who come from all over Guyana to view thrilling sport events on the Bartica Community Centre ground.
Yours faithfully,
George Carrington
