The national rugby Sevens team will play the opening game of the International Rugby Board (iRB) Sevens World Series when they go up against England on day one of the tournament on February 12 in Las Vegas, USA.
According to a release from the Guyana Rugby Football Union, the Guyana-England matchup kicks off at 9:24am at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, where the two-day (February 12 and 13) tournament will be held.
England is the current leader in the series followed by New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Wales, USA and Scotland. Guyana is in Pool A with England, Argentina and France. Guyana will play their second game on the opening day at 1:05pm against Argentina and conclude their pool play-offs against France. At last year’s tournament the national Sevens team drew its game against France, one of the 12 super powers of rugby.
The Pool round will be followed on Day 1 by the Cup Quarter- Finals, while on Day 2, by the Bowl, Shield and Plate Quarter, Semi-Finals and Finals and the Cup Semi-Finals and Final.
According to the release, the Cup Final will be broadcast live worldwide for the first time by NBC at 2:15pm (West Coast USA time). The Cup Final will be followed by the Finals of the Shield, Bowl and Plate. Guyana, who is representing the Caribbean as NACRA Champions, Canada and Uruguay from the American hemisphere, along with Japan, will join the 12 core teams of the Sevens World Series for the North American leg of the Series.
USA has also qualified as a core team in the Series.
The 12 core teams are England, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Argentina, Wales, Australia, South Africa, France, Kenya, Scotland and the USA.
Meanwhile, the Series have so far been played in Dubai, South Africa and New Zealand, and will continue in Hong Kong, Australia, England and conclude in Scotland.
