La Grange man charged with brotherโ€™s murder

Almost five weeks after being shot by police as he fled after allegedly killing his brother, Ashton Peters appeared at the Wales Magistrates Court yesterday charged with murder and he was remanded to prison.

He was not required to plead to the capital offence when he appeared before Magistrate Ann Mclennan. It is alleged that on December 21, 2010 at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, Peters murdered his brother, Royston Peters.

Ashton Peters being lifted out of court after he was charged with the murder of his brother yesterday.

An autopsy had found that Royston died as a result of a stab wound to the lung. Police had said that investigations revealed that Royston and his brother had an argument over an electrical transformer during which he was stabbed to his chest. He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police had said that they responded and during efforts to arrest the suspect, he attacked the responding officers with a cutlass, causing them to use force. Peters was shot and injured to his left foot, as a result, and he was hospitalised for several weeks.

He was unable to walk and had to be lifted into and out of the courtroom yesterday. He will return to court on February 28 at Wales.
