President of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation, Peter Greene, says the GAPF is in an advantageous position to promote Sports Tourism by hosting even bigger international events such as World and Regional Championships at home.
Greene yesterday in a release highlighted the accomplishments of the amateur sporting body.
“The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation started the year 2010 by claiming the Runner-up National Sports Award (Most Improved Federation) 2009.
“Its programme for 2010 included the continuation of its five-year programme for 2008 – 2012 with the holding of promotional and awareness programmes as well as the annual domestic sporting activities, referee and coaching clinics, and attendance at government seminars on sport.” According to the release, “outstanding achievements by the federation for 2010 at the international level included the historic hosting (in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport) of the Fourth Annual Caribbean Islands Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships where Guyana captured the Men’s Team Title as well as a number of gold, silver and bronze medals competing against the best from the Caribbean.”
Despite the weakened attendance at the North American Regional as well as the Central American and Caribbean Games Championships in Puerto Rico with a below strength four-member team (due to visa denials) versus eight-member teams, Guyana became the only Caribbean country to win the prestigious Best Lifter Men, Open overall award at both the Caribbean and Central American and Caribbean Championship level through Randolph Morgan.
The GAPF, the release noted, is the only federation to date to have produced individual gold medals (two) at the CAC Games level for 2010.
At the congress held in Potchefstroom, South Africa this year, the world governing body (IPF) voted unanimously to move the GAPF from being provisional (with no voting rights) to full membership (with voting rights),” the release ended.
