The resurfacing of the National Park circuit will be completed by January 28, according to Director of Sport, Neil Kumar.
The resurfacing project, which also entails resurfacing the E.R. Burrowes School of Arts car park, used by
visitors to the park, will be done concurrently and will meet the Friday deadline, Kumar assured while speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday.
“Within a week’s time we plan to finish,” Kumar said referring to the resurfacing project, which begins on Monday.
He specifically identified Friday as the deadline for the project and stated that the engineers are “already mobilized” and ready to get started on Monday. The contract for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport resurfacing project was awarded to DIPCON Engineering at a cost of $29 million, according to Kumar.
He added that the Ministry of Public Works and Communication will be overlooking the project.
Also speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday was national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed who said he will be visiting the National Park intermittently over the coming week to view the project, which is being supervised by engineer Walter Willis of the Public Works Ministry.
Mohamed was also optimistic that the rehabilitation works will be completed by Friday, since he has scheduled the first race on his 2011 cycling calendar the next day, Saturday.
“I will be close with the engineer since they have to hand over the Park by Saturday… It will be finished before Saturday,” Mohamed said.
