The eruption of another fire at the Mandela Avenue landfill this afternoon has seen nearby residents continuing to express disgust at the situation.
Residents in the area told Stabroek News today that the fire began sometime after 2 pm when a few explosions were heard. The blaze began with white smoke followed by thick black smoke which enveloped the area.
A fire engine responded to the scene shortly after 3 pm and persons working in the area told this newspaper that the fire was under control as several bulldozers and excavators were being mobilized to respond to the situation. However, nearby residents, noted that given past experiences, the fire may continue for at least two days.
The stench from the landfill and smoke from fires have besieged residents for years and the government and the city have been under pressure to do something about it.
