The Murray Support Group on Sunday will be in Leguan to participate in the regular service at St. Peters Anglican Church when the opportunity will be taken to commemorate the life of PNCR Executive Winston Shripal Murray.
Next Monday, January 31, will be the birth anniversary of the late PNCR executive and the Murray Support Group at a meeting Tuesday decided to commemorate this particular occasion and implement a number of programmes.
On Sunday members of the group will travel to Leguan along with his widow Marva Murray and members of her family, according to a press release.
Among those also going will be Malcolm Parris, Vincent Alexander, Kadim Khan, Dr Richard Van West-Charles and Gillian Burton. Some members of the group and Mrs Murray will lay floral tributes on the tomb of Winston Murray.
Khan is expected to deliver a short tribute and the service will be presided over by Father Albert James.
However, a more detailed programme will be unveiled subsequently in honour of Murray to mark his contribution to his country, his Party and the Guyanese society.
He was the PNCR Shadow Minister for Finance at the time of his death last November at age 69.
Meanwhile, the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) has established a book award based on the Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (SSEE) and the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). Murray was Patron of ACDA’s Education Management Committee. This award will be maintained by the Winston Murray Support Group, the release added.
It is also proposed, the release said, to establish a memorial lecture series in Murray’s name at which a reputable economist will deliver a lecture on a topical issue on an annual basis.
This will be in recognition of his success as a professional economist and his contribution to Guyana’s economic recovery in the 80s.
Moreover, a Winston Murray Debating Trophy will be launched for secondary schools and this particular award will be in recognition of Murray’s prowess as a speaker and his debating skills in Parliament.
Murray had served as a senior minister and deputy prime minister in the PNC administration between 1985 and 1992.
