The behind-schedule repair works being carried out at the Colgrain swimming pool are expected to be completed within a month’s time, according to Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), Alfred King.
Rehabilitation works at the MCYS Colgrain Swimming Pool on Camp Street were scheduled for completion by last October month-end, but works to the facility are still ongoing.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday, via telephone, King explained that the completion of the repairs to the pool’s filtration system have been pushed behind schedule since the “filter tank that is needed at the facility had to be specially produced because suppliers don’t shelve those”.
He noted, however that the fabrication of the filter tank for the pool has been completed and he was informed that the much needed part has been shipped to Guyana for installation at the facility.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the expected time of arrival for the filter tank is “two to three weeks”.
King added that following its arrival, the tank will require an additional one week period to be installed.
In the meantime, King stated that the contractors, Fyffe Building and Contracting Services, are working on the filtration system’s electrical circuit, which complements the filter tank, at the pool.
Other works, he explained, such as plumbing and additional electrical works at the facility have been completed.
The Colgrain Pool has been closed since June last year after it was discovered that the pool’s filter tank had developed a hole that could not be easily repaired. Administrator of the pool Stephanie Fraser had said the hole was discovered on June 24 and after several attempts to rectify the situation, it was deemed beyond the scope of repairs and a new filter was settled on.
The pool remains closed until it is fully refurbished and operational, and an “Out of Order” sign had been placed at the entrance to the pool.
