Kaieteur National Park sees hike in visitor arrivals

Visitor arrivals at the Kaieteur National Park were the highest last year since 2007,  and Chairman of the Kaieteur National Park  Commission Shyam Nokta  sees this as a reflection of its growing attraction as a popular tourist site because of Guyana’s heightened international profile. Between 2001 and 2006 visitors to the park were just more than 2,000 per year  but the numbers have grown significantly since 2007,  the National Parks Commission (NPC) said yesterday in a press release.“This is clearly a reflection of the mounting interest in Guyana which has been boosted by the country’s role in initiatives to combat global climate change and protecting the environment,” Nokta is quoted as saying in the release.

According to the NPC, arrivals at the park in 2007 when Guyana hosted a leg of the cricket World Cup tournament were 4,512.

The number of visitors to the world-renowned Kaieteur Falls dropped to 3,317 in 2008 but rose to 4,032 in 2009 and moved up to 4,253 last year.

Guyana, the release added, is  becoming more attractive as a tourist destination with the government continuing to partner with private stakeholders to develop the product.
