Assistant Secretary/Treasurer of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) and former GABA Treasurer, Vijay Panday said yesterday that he will not be seeking re-election or election to any other executive post in GABA when that body stages its Annual General Meeting next month.
In an interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Panday disclosed that one of the reasons he would not be in the running for an executive post in GABA is because he “wouldn’t have the time if re-elected as the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer.”
Another reason Panday mentioned is that he just can’t serve as a basketball executive under current GABA President, Trevor Rose. “At no time I would like to serve basketball under Trevor Rose,” declared Panday. “I wasn’t prepared to work in any organisation where the President becomes the Secretary and Treasurer and the Vice President and everything and still wants to play basketball in an active club. I’m not prepared to work in any organisation with that type of thing.”
Panday explained that the new GABA executive should mainly comprise members that are not actively involved in a basketball club. “Basketball could only go forward if we get people outside of basketball to take the executive posts, people that are not affiliated to clubs and people that have an interest for the game,” he opined.
“For me, I’m not seeking any re-election. I don’t want to be a part of any administration right now for basketball… I think it’s time other persons take my position and see what they can do for basketball,” he added.
Panday said that he felt disappointed to know that basketball has declined during his time as an executive and said that his club had already identified a nominee for GABA’s presidential post since he will not be supporting Rose at the GABA’s upcoming AGM, which is scheduled for February 13. However he was unwilling to disclose his club’s nominee at the time.
“I won’t support Trevor [Rose] to be the president. I think he is too young to hold such a big position and he doesn’t understand the concept of being the president of a big organisation such as GABA. If under any circumstances he is re-elected as the president, he needs to let the executives work and not be micro-managing the association,” said Panday.
