The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is moving to revitalize the game in Berbice and towards this end will meet with stakeholders today from 2pm at the Rose Hall Sports Club, Canje.
According to Commissioner of Police and President of the GTTA Henry Greene, his association plans to reactivate the Berbice Table Tennis Sub Association, whose last President was Ashton Sargeant in the late 1970s.
“The whole objective is to put systems in place and we are hoping to form a sub-association in Berbice,” Greene told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
Greene said apart from revitalizing the sport in the Ancient County the GTTA also plans to stage a few tournaments there shortly.
Representing the GTTA at today’s meeting will be vice president Balram Persaud, Patrick Triumph and Linden Johnson while Berbice will be represented by former Mayor of New Amsterdam, Errol Alphonso and former Berbice player Floyd Conway.
The county of Berbice has
a rich tradition in table tennis.
According to former national champion Mike Baptiste, Berbice produced the first male to win Caribbean title.
That honour went to Anand Sookram who won the junior boys singles title at the 1965 Caribbean championships in Trinidad and Tobago.
Berbice also produced another Caribbean champion in Doreen Chow Wah, who was Caribbean queen at the 1970’s championships in Barbados. Other outstanding players include Desiree Lancaster, Samuel Duke, Colin Moore, Clairmont Saul, the late Roy Fredericks, Rekha Tiwari, Alvin Kallicharan, Isaac Sewnarine and Gopie Beasmonie, said Baptiste.
