The Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) programme, organised by the Street Solutions Organisation, is set to bounce off today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The YBG launch, slated to begin at 13:00hrs, will also be complemented by the launch of the YBG website and several key stakeholders are expected to attend, including government officials, prospective sponsors and school teams.
Also on the programme for today’s launch are exhibition games featuring the YBG Elite players.
Among the YBG Elite players is 17-year-old junior national point guard Dominic Vincente who has been chosen by the YBG organisation as the face for its new logo.
The new logo, which features the silhouette of an average youth basketball player in the centre of a basketball engulfed in flames, is also set to be launched today.
According to a release from the YBG organisation, “the significance of this part of the logo is that the organisation plans to re-ignite the interest of the sport at the youth level and transform ordinary youths like Vincente, through its systematic and structured approach to developing the sport locally.”
“Vincente was chosen because he embodies all of the three core principles of Youth Basketball Guyana; Scholarship, Prowess and Leadership, according to Co-founder of YBG Chris Bowman.
Vincente is a fourth form student at the Guyana Education Trust College and represented Guyana during the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) basketball tournament last year.
Vincente had made the 2009 IGG which played in Suriname and he also plays for the Ravens basketball club.
Immediately following the launch will be basketball exhibition games featuring a YBG High School warm-up segment and two feature games with the YBG Elite players.
The first game will be between the YBG Elite and Masters and on Sunday against the Ravens basketball team.
