The first housing scheme in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) was commissioned at Glasgow, New Amsterdam on Friday by Minister of Housing and Water Irfaan Ali, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Ali handed over responsibility of the scheme to Local Government Minister Kellawan Lall, who in turn vested the responsibility of the scheme to New Amsterdam Mayor Claude Henry.
The municipality also received a $28M multipurpose building, the first of four to be commissioned nationwide, GINA said.
Meanwhile the Housing Minister challenged all stakeholders to set up a management formula to ensure that the facility is properly managed and he underscored his ministry’s readiness to facilitate expansion.
He also said that this year more than $800M will be expended in Region Six to facilitate infrastructural works all across the region.
Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha called the day historic, and disclosed that there were 12 more schemes to be handed over across the region and all of them would have basic amenities and utilities.
Mustapha said further that the 960 house-lot Glasgow scheme will bring revenue for the council and he urged residents to constantly maintain the infrastructure.
Meanwhile Mayor Henry readily offered the municipality’s assistance in whatever way it can and urged residents to demonstrate an interest in their scheme by properly maintaining it.
The Glasgow Housing Scheme was constructed under the European Union Low Income Housing Programme. Additionally, multipurpose buildings were constructed at Westminster, Belle West and Cummings Lodge and these will be commissioned later this year. The buildings were constructed at a total cost of $114.2M, GINA added.
