Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday handed down a three-year sentence to a man and granted another $10,000 bail, after both appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One on a charge of breaking and entering.
It is alleged that on January 28 at Thomas Street, Georgetown, Andrew Jones and Jai Lall broke and entered the home of Janet Williams and stole a gold chain, foodstuff and other items, amounting to a total of $337,000.
Lall, a fisherman, pleaded guilty to the charge while Jones, a security guard, pleaded not guilty. According to Lall, Jones knows nothing of the matter.
According to the facts as presented by the prosecution, the Virtual Complainant (VC) secured her home and left for work.
When the VC returned, she found her neighbours detaining the defendants along with a bag of foodstuff. The court was told that the neighbours related to the VC that the defendants were in her house. The matter was reported to the police and the defendants were later arrested and charged.
When the magistrate asked Lall, who had hopped into the courtroom on one leg, what was the matter with his leg, he responded that people on the road had beaten him and broken his leg.
He was given a sentence of three years in prison, while Jones was placed on $10,000 bail.
Jones was ordered to report to court on February 17 for report and fixture.
