A man was yesterday placed on $30,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he was accused of stealing a bicycle from a nine-year-old boy.
It is alleged that on January 13, at Forshaw Street, Parmanan Beckham of 49 D’Urban Street, Lodge, stole a BMX bicycle worth $18,000 from the Virtual Complainant (VC). The accused, a security guard, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the prosecutor, the child was riding his bike when the defendant asked him for a lift and the boy agreed to his request. It was while the defendant was towing the VC that he pushed him off the bike, and made good his escape with it.
A report was made to the police and the accused was subsequently apprehended and charged.
Beckham was initially placed on $40,000 bail, but after his request for a reduction he was granted $30,000, and the matter was adjourned to February 7 at Court Six for report and fixture.
