European Union diplomat Albert Russell reigned supreme in capturing the Ming’s Products Medal Play Golf tournament last weekend at the Lusignan Golf course as members of the diplomatic community continued their excellent showing this year.
Russell, playing off a 20 handicap, had an impeccable front nine of 39 and while wavering a little on the back, shot a 47 for a combined 86, net 66 to win his maiden title following on the heels of Canadian High Commissioner Francois Montour who won a tournament recently.
His score was enough to stave off a strong challenge from club secretary William Walker, who played controlled if unspectacular golf shooting 13 pars and one birdie, ending with a gross 75 and a net 67.
Third place went to Munaff Arjune who also shot a gross 75 but with a handicap of seven ended with a net 68.
Mohanlall “Santo” Dinanauth took the best gross score with 74 and nearest to the pin went to Roy Cummings.
Thirty six golfers battled for supremacy in the day’s event and the low scores were an indication of the good conditions including shorter rough, and greens that ran relatively true thanks in no small part to the work of grounds keeper Mike Mangal and his staff. Ming’s Product Director John Chin said the company which is the agent for Yamaha Products in Guyana was happy to sponsor the event and looked forward to this being an annual event.
It was a sentiment echoed by club treasurer Brian Hackett who thanked the company for the support during a candle-lit prize giving ceremony.
Meanwhile, the annual Stag Beer Medal Play tournament sponsored by Ansa McAl will take place on Saturday at the Lusignan Course starting at 12:30 hours.
