Guyana’s Jessica Stephenson swam off with straight wins in all five of the events she participated in on Sunday at the Sea Hawks Second Annual New Year Splash hosted at the Dr. Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago.
According to a release from Stephenson’s Trinidad club, Marlins, Stephenson participated in three individual events in the girls 15-and-over category, while she also aided her team in winning the mixed medley and free relays.
Stephenson swam the 800m freestyle, 200m breast and 50m breast. In the mixed relay Stephenson swam the breast leg, while she was anchor in the free relay.
Her first time in a short course 800m freestyle, Stephenson finished that event in 10:29.05s. In the 50m and 200m breaststroke events Stephenson also set personal best times, finishing the events in 35.34 seconds and 2:43.44s respectively.
In the 50m breast, the release said, Stephenson also managed to outclass Trinidad’s record holder 18-year- old Cherelle Thompson, who had represented Trinidad at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The Sea Hawks New Year Splash is a fun meet designed to get swimmers back to form after the Christmas vacation. The meet is also a qualifier for the CARIFTA and CCCAN (Central American and the Caribbean) Championships.
