Sunday’s scheduled Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Developmental Meet at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary was postponed owing to a memorial service that was held for Ashton Alleyne former Discipline and Welfare Officer of the Royal Youth Movement (Royals) athletics club.
So said Tournament Director of the AAG Mark Scott, who said that the club, Royals, had conveyed its unavailability to participate at the meet.
Scott noted that other athletes had also indicated that they would have been attending the service.
Scott said it was therefore quite logical to postpone the meet to a “feasible date” yet to be determined.
President of the AAG Colin Boyce related that the Developmental Meet set for Sunday will therefore be the association’s first Developmental Meet for the year. Boyce also said that the meet will be held at the Police Sports Club ground as it was originally scheduled to be held, while the postponed meet will return to Linden.
“The club (Royals) indicated that because of their ties with Mr. Alleyne they would be unable to compete, and quite a number of athletes from the other clubs also said that they would be attending the service. We will facilitate the meet later, so next week’s (Developmental Meet) will be hosted at the Police Ground and that will be our first Developmental Meet for the year.” Boyce said.
According to Hanson Ambrose, coach for Royals, Alleyne, the father of stellar athletes Rhobyn and Rhondell Alleyne, died on January 23 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Ambrose noted that Alleyne suffered from a heart condition.
Christopher Gaskin, a founder and former coach of Royals, recalled that it was because of his children’s involvement in the sport that Alleyne got involved with the club. Alleyne served on the club’s executive in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Alleyne was the husband of Ruby Alleyne, the current PRO of Royals.
A memorial was held on Sunday at Holivet Seventh Day Adventist Church, Durban Backlands while the funeral and burial took place yesterday at Sisters Village, Berbice, according to Ambrose.
