Fourteen youths were yesterday afternoon picked up in various parts of the city on suspicions that they committed robberies.
Up to late last evening, they were still being questioned by the police. The arrests were made sometime before 5 pm.
When Stabroek News arrived at the Brickdam police station where they were initially taken, furious relatives had gathered.
One mother told Stabroek News that her 14-year-old son was arrested on Queen Street shortly after leaving home to play basketball.
The woman said that he left shortly after returning home from school.
The visibly upset woman added that when she inquired from the police why he was arrested she was told that “they got a campaign going on”.
She said that she feels bad about the situation that her son was in because he was going to play basketball and was not involved in any wrong-doing.
This newspaper was told that ranks also targeted the Stabroek Market area and mini bus parks.
