A mother of two yesterday pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics when she appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that June Percival of 121 Campbellvilleousing Scheme had in her possession 7 grammes of cannabis on Tuesday.
According to the facts as presented by Special Anti- Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah, officers received information that led to the defendant’s arrest. The CANU officers went to the home of the accused and explained the purpose of their visit.
A search was conducted in the presence of the defendant and the illegal substance was found.
After being cautioned, the woman reportedly told officers that the drug was for her own personal use and she was arrested.
Attorney-at-law Hubert Rodney told the court that the woman knew nothing about the illegal substance and it was found outside the house in a fowl pen.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted Percival bail in the sum of $50,000 and transferred the matter to Court Five for report and fixture for trial on February 7.
