A sailor from Campbellville Housing Scheme was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge of trafficking in narcotics.
It is alleged that on Tuesday at Lot 74 Campbellville Housing Scheme, Bryan Small had in his possession 123 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The father of six pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
According to the facts as presented by Special Anti- Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Oswald Massiah, on the day in question, CANU officers acting on information received visited the premises of the accused and found him in the house.
They informed him about the purpose of their visit and after conducting a search, the prohibited substance was found in plastic bags behind a chair.
The CANU officers then showed the substance to the defendant, and told him about the offence. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
According to attorney-at-law Euclin Gomes, who represented Small, the house is occupied by three other adults, and as such his client denies having anything to do with the drugs, although he admits being aware that the substance was there.
Gomes told the court that the substance was found in an area where everyone frequents.
The attorney then proceeded to ask for reasonable bail for his client, based on the fact that he has an unblemished record and poses no risk of flight.
However, an objection to bail by Massiah was upheld. The matter was then adjourned to March 2.
