The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) season is scheduled to get underway on Sunday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, with a developmental track meet from 11:30 hours.
The meet will be hosted by the Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC). According to Mark Scott, Tournament Director of the AAG, the meet will be contested in the under 18, 20 and open categories for males and females.
The developmental meets are seen as a testing ground for athletes to measure where they are alongside their competitors early in the season. Coaches also get an opportunity to analyze what needs to be added to their athletes training regimen to improve times.
In a telephone interview, President of the AAG Colin Boyce said that “since it’s pre-competition season” he expects nothing in particular out of the athletes but rather this meet should provide an assessment of the level of preparedness for the rest of the season. Further, while the developmental meets serve as an assessment of the athletes there is also the possibility that some athletes, especially sprinters, could peak too early in the season.
