Janeed Chan died yesterday after he was hit by a truck at D’ Edward Village while on his way to uplift his pension.
Chan, 65, of Cotton Tree Village, West Coast Berbice, sustained a gaping wound to the back of his head and a broken right knee and other injuries when he was hit off his bicycle.
He was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and after treatment he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
He was in an unconscious state and died while receiving further treatment.
Reports are that the accident occurred around 8am. Chan, who was cycling along the road, made a turn in an attempt to get to the other side when the truck, bearing licence plate GAA 2950, which had just crossed the Berbice Bridge, collided with him.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that after hitting Chan, the driver kept on going and stopped a short distance away then exited the vehicle.
The witness said persons around were busy rendering assistance to the injured man and by the time they looked back for the driver he had already left the scene.
Reports are that he joined another vehicle and headed to the police station to report the accident and was subsequently arrested. He is being held at the Blairmont Police Station.
Chan’s wife, Bishamdai ‘Chando’ Chan, 55, told Stabroek News that her husband left home around 7:30 am to uplift his pension at the Blairmont Estate.
Soon after, she received a call about the accident and by the time she got to the scene police from the Blairmont Station were already there. An officer was assisting in placing her husband into a minibus to take him to the hospital.
Bishamdai told this newspaper that her husband was bleeding from the wound to his head. She accompanied him to the hospital, where he was treated before being transferred.
Meanwhile, persons are calling for street lights to be placed at the junction where the accident occurred.
